Mixed Farming Systems

National Certificate

NQF LEVEL 1

Credits: 120

SAQA ID: 48971

For the majority of South Africa's subsistence and smallholder farmers, the reality of agricultural work involves both crops and livestock — often side by side on the same piece of land. The Mixed Farming Systems qualification at NQF Level 1 is designed for learners in exactly this context: people who are already engaged in some form of integrated farming and want to formalise and strengthen the skills they are developing through daily practice.

At this foundational level, learners develop the basic competence to participate in both plant and animal production activities under close supervision. You will learn how to care for common livestock species, perform basic crop cultivation tasks, maintain farming infrastructure, and follow good agricultural practice guidelines in a mixed farming context. The emphasis is on building safe, consistent work habits and developing the foundational knowledge that supports progression to higher levels.

WHY ACS ACADEMY?

ACS Academy's entry requirements for this qualification are deliberately accessible — basic NQF Level 1 literacy and numeracy — reflecting our commitment to making agricultural education available to the widest possible range of learners, including those who have had limited access to formal schooling. Recognition of Prior Learning processes ensure that informal farming knowledge is appropriately recognised and credited. Learners who complete this qualification are well positioned to progress to Mixed Farming Systems at NQF Level 2, or to branch into either plant production or animal production pathways at the appropriate level. The flexibility of the mixed farming qualification makes it a strong foundation for diverse agricultural career paths.

“

For rural communities, organisations supporting smallholder farmers, and agribusinesses employing entry-level farm workers, this qualification represents an accessible, practical investment in agricultural capacity building that pays dividends at both the individual and community level.
