Health promotion is one of the most impactful — and most underappreciated — fields in South Africa's health and social development landscape. Health Promotion Officers work in communities, workplaces, schools, and healthcare settings to educate people about disease prevention, healthy lifestyles, reproductive health, substance abuse, and a wide range of other health-related topics that directly affect quality of life and life expectancy. The Health Promotion Officer qualification equips learners with the knowledge, skills, and practical tools to carry out this work effectively and with lasting impact.
The curriculum develops competence in the core dimensions of health promotion practice: understanding the social determinants of health and how they affect communities in different ways, planning and implementing health education programmes and campaigns, facilitating health promotion workshops and community engagement activities, working with vulnerable populations including children, the elderly, and people living with chronic illness, communicating health messages accurately and clearly across diverse language and literacy levels, and evaluating the effectiveness of health promotion interventions.
