The Occupational Health and Safety Officer is one of the most important roles in any workplace safety structure. Sitting at the operational level of the safety management hierarchy, the OHS Officer is responsible for the day-to-day implementation and monitoring of safety procedures, the identification and reporting of hazards, the coordination of safety training, and the maintenance of the documentation and records required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations. The OHS Officer qualification at NQF Level 4 equips learners to fulfil this role with competence, confidence, and professional credibility.
The curriculum covers the core competencies of the OHS Officer role: understanding and applying relevant South African safety legislation and regulations, conducting workplace hazard identification and risk assessments, performing safety inspections and audits, investigating and documenting incidents and near-misses, facilitating safety inductions and toolbox talks, managing the health and safety committee process, and maintaining the records and reports required by the Department of Employment and Labour.
